You do not have to play the first game and considering this one is better is pretty much every way, you're better starting off here. That said, there is a steep learning curve so be sure to read around the forum a little to get some advice on how to start out. DOS2 is more combo-based and plays like a chess game while POE2 kind of just checks that you have the required buffs and gear to defeat the encounter and if you don't you flail at the sky hopelessly.
