I had a 150 mile motorway journey today though and managed an average of 46 mpg! I was taking it easy though, doing 55-60 mph the whole way [H] [:$] thanks all! my punto 1.2 before my golf did quite abit better obviously so just wondered if it was the car or was the norm for a 1.6! oh well its worth it!

You may need to unplug two coolant hoses to loosen the pipe away from the egr valve mounting rods. The juddering and revs at 1100pm now only occur when the car is idling cold. If warm, on idle the revs sit nicely at 700rpm, although if you accelerate it does rumble as you pass 1100rpm.

Faulty MAF sensor would high on my list, can cause syptoms your describing. Replace EGR valve or blank it off leaving the original one connected to stop dash light coming on. Guaranteed 100% will cure problem. They can be troublesome. True, had an Astra estate3 EGR's replaced in 10 years.
OOO I didn't notice to topic I posted the same sort of problem for my 1.6 too! I'll have a look at the fuses ontop of the battery tommorow as I know my luck it will play at a very inconvinient time for me lol. Never had a problem starting the 1.6 always fires first time every time till today, just makes the usual noise but doesn't fire into life.

My VW Golf mk 4, 1.6 for no reason will cut out / stall, no warning given but full set of warning lights will show and my power steering is dnied once it restarts, it just has 60,000 miles done and always serviced by VW garage. Please, can anybody advise me.
xJay1337. First thing you'd want to do is slap on a multimeter onto the battery and measure the voltage. Should be around 14.4v charge. with the engine off the battery should be over 12v. Your symptons suggest a duff battery because you'd get an alternator light in the event of an alternator failure.
